Forensic Analytics for the Option Seller

If you're running a theta strategy (Covered Calls, Cash-Secured Puts, The Wheel), you're probably tracking it in a spreadsheet. The premium columns add up fine. But the questions that actually matter are harder: Is my real return trending up, or am I just collecting premium while my capital efficiency quietly erodes? When I get assigned, how long does that capital sit idle before it's working again — and what is that costing me? Am I making disciplined entries, or have a few lucky outcomes been covering for sloppy process?

Thetaphor is built to answer those questions honestly — not to flatter you with a running P&L, but to give you a clear-eyed view of what your capital is actually doing and whether your process holds up under scrutiny.

Built on Capital-Weighted Measurement

Most trade journals treat every position equally when summarizing a period. A one-contract speculative trade carries the same weight as a ten-contract anchor position. Thetaphor weights everything by capital deployed and days held, so the metrics that matter — realized yield, period grade, volatility risk premium — reflect the true influence each trade had on your capital. A disciplined large position improves your period metrics. A sloppy small trade barely moves them. That's the honest way to measure a theta strategy.

The Volatility Edge Framework

A core input to Thetaphor's grading and pre-trade analysis is the relationship between implied volatility and historical volatility — whether the premium you're being offered fairly compensates for the volatility the underlying has actually been delivering. This isn't a predictor of whether any individual trade succeeds. It's a measure of pricing quality: are you being paid appropriately for the risk you're accepting? Consistently entering trades where the answer is no is how the math works against you in aggregate, even when individual trades look fine.

Thetaphor normalizes both values to the same mathematical basis before comparing them, correcting a systematic error that causes most traders to overstate their edge. The platform then applies this framework at every level: per-trade at entry, per-trade at close, and aggregated across full reporting periods.

Honest Capital Accountability

Premium yield only tells part of the story. If you're running The Wheel and holding assigned shares between covered call cycles, that idle capital is working against your efficiency whether you're measuring it or not. Thetaphor includes it — bagholding shares are tracked and factored into your realized yield figures so the numbers reflect what your capital is actually doing, not just the trades that stayed in the option contract.

Process Over Outcomes

Every closed position receives a trade grade based on entry conditions. This is a heuristic measure of whether you had a genuine volatility edge, and whether your strike was positioned outside the expected move boundary. Empirical analysis of real trade data shows D-grade trades (structural entry failures) produce dramatically worse outcomes than disciplined entries, and that relationship holds regardless of market conditions. The grade is a coaching tool, not a scoreboard. A profitable trade can still be a C. A losing trade can still be an A.

The Pre-Mortem

Before you place a trade, Thetaphor's Pre-Mortem checker lets you run the full analysis on a potential position — volatility edge, normalized IV/HV ratio, expected move bands, delta, and annualized yield — so you can see the honest picture before you commit capital. It's not a recommendation engine. It's a quick, structured way to make sure you're not stepping in front of a steamroller because you needed to feel productive.

Recording, Reporting, Evolving

The ledger is your trade-by-trade record — every position from open through close or assignment, with customizable columns and a forensic detail view for each trade.

The reports page steps back to the bigger picture: weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly periods with capital-weighted metrics including volatility edge, realized volatility risk premium, and a Period GPA that reflects the aggregate quality of your process — not just what the market gave you.

What’s in a Name?

The name combines θ (Theta), the Greek symbol for time decay, with the suffix -phor (to carry or bear). Thetaphor bears the weight of your data and your trade history, helping you understand exactly how time decay and volatility shape your long-term results.

Important Note

Thetaphor is an analytical and educational tool. This site cannot be used for placing trades and does not interact with your brokerage. You enter the transaction information you want to track, providing the manual "Referee" oversight that automated platforms often ignore.

Lastly, your data belongs to you, and is never shared, aggregated, sold, or used for any purpose other than your own analysis (see the Legal tab for more details).

Ledger Field Definitions

Every trader has a unique rhythm, and your workspace should reflect that. Your transaction log includes a variety of fields—some you'll enter yourself, others that are optional based on the trade type, and advanced metrics calculated automatically by the system.

Because everyone prioritizes different data points, you can use the Customize Columns feature to show only what matters to your strategy and hide the rest. Whether you want a data-rich deep dive or a minimalist overview, you're in control of your view.

Reports Field Definitions

While individual trade metrics track your day-to-day execution, Reporting is where your data transforms into actionable insight. By aggregating performance into specific periods—weekly, monthly, quarterly, or yearly—the platform reveals the high-level trends and patterns that individual trade logs often hide.

In a traditional spreadsheet, generating these insights is notoriously difficult. Manually calculating average position metrics, not to mention time-weighted returns, and adjusting for partial periods at the beginning and end of months (or weeks, or quarters) requires constant maintenance and complex formulas. As you add more trades, the risk of errors increases, and the time spent on upkeep can become overwhelming. For many traders, this becomes a barrier to regularly reviewing their performance, which is crucial for growth and improvement.

Our reporting engine automates this complexity, instantly bridging the gap between raw data and professional-grade performance metrics.

Whether you are looking for a high-level Asset Summary to see what stocks contribute to the most to your returns, or a Monthly Review to measure your consistency, these reports provide the Big Picture of your portfolio's health.

As with your ledger, every reporting view is fully modular. You can use the Customize Columns feature to toggle specific summary metrics from the options below.
